It’s time for another

Furniture Upcycle Friday

It's F* Up Friday and we have an adorable vanity makeover with Velvet Finishes and Frog Tape!

Yay!

This week’s upcycle has us being a mixologist and creating a custom Velvet Finishes color.

I found this cute little piece and I thought it was a desk.  Then I realized that is probably wasn’t because that would mean it was for a left-handed person.  Since lefties usually get the shaft in this right-handed world, I realized it was not a desk.  I looked on the back and it was stamped “vanity dresser”.

And that it is, a perfect little make-up vanity.

It's F* Up Friday! Look at this adorable furniture makeover. A perfect little dressing vanity.

The top of the piece was laminate.  Super slick laminate.

I decided to use my sander rather than the Ready.  I do believe the Ready would take care of the shine but, honestly, the sander was closer.  So I ran it across the top, THEN used the Ready just to make sure all of the dust was removed.

Now on to the fun part, mixing the paint!!

This was a 3 color Velvet Finishes recipe…

Exotic/Ethereal/Vivid

I started with just Exotic and Vivid but it was deeper than I wanted so I added the Ethereal to lighten it up.  It’s a really pretty color.

By the way, in case you missed it, Exotic is our Colour of the Month for October.  Read about coral inspirations here.  Lots of pretties to see.

Since I was only painting the drawers and part of the top, I only needed a little bit of paint.  I was actually going to make a 6 oz batch but ended up with 8 oz since I added the Ethereal.

I used 4 oz of Exotic, 2 oz Vivid and 2 oz Ethereal.  Easy.

The Accomplice taped with Frog Tape Delicate Surface to create our design.

Remember, Delicate Surface type should be used if your applying to fresh paint.

We went with a little corner detail.  We measured off so that inside of the line would be at 2″ off the edge.  We measured the full rectangle then added 1″ in on each side of the corner.

I am serious when I tell you, taping shapes with Frog Tape is one of The Accomplices favorites ways to make a big impact with little effort in a furniture makeover.

Frog Tape is incredibly simple to use.  It doesn’t stretch or pull out of shape at all.  Simply put it where you want it, run your finger down the sides of the tape so you have no seepage and pull off while the paint is still wet.

EASY!!!!

We taped the same pattern on the top and the drawers, scaling the size accordingly.

We painted the outside edges of the pattern with the Exotic and the inside with the custom Velvet Finishes colour mix.

I love the subtle pattern using tonal colors created.

Amazing how two simple things – the pattern and the two-tone finish – create such a gorgeous piece.  Details can be easy and still create an incredible amount of interest.

This piece is going into a teenage girls bohemian bedroom.  Wait til you see the custom Moroccan inspired bed we had made.  It’s all a surprise for her and I cannot wait to share the room reveal!

So what do you think of the pattern we created on the furniture?  Simple but cool, right?  And the color mix?  Nice?

Do you ever mix your own paint colors?  It’s super easy with Velvet Finishes!!
