Furniture Upcycle Friday

or

F*UP Friday

as I like to call it.

Welcome to our Friday series where we share cool furniture upcycles and makeovers.

Check out the 70’s wardrobe turned craft cabinet…

I have had this piece for a while.

I paid too much for it but I really liked it.  I love drawers behind doors on furniture so I just couldn’t pass it up.

Plus I’m a total sucker for this type of door style.  Don’t ask me why, it’s just cool.

I do love a good 70’s vibe.

I have had this vintage wallpaper laying around the studio for forever.  I was excited to use it for my color inspiration and apply it to the drawers with our new Decopaste product.

Can you believe how close the colors are to the Velvet Finishes colors?

(Here’s a previous Decopaste project I posted about.)

After I used the Ready to clean and degloss, I began painting by using Enchanting on the inside and  Modern on the outside.  Part of the piece is laminate and part of the piece is actually plastic.  All of the doors are plastic, as is the ornate top piece.  I was a little surprised by that.  The paint stuck just fine though.

Lovely squat, right?

The piece was in really good shape except for the hole in the back, where someone evidently ran a cord.  We simply cut a scrap piece of luan the size of the back and stuck it in there to cover the entire inside.

I got one good coat on…

before I moved on to the drawers.

Using Decopaste is simple.

Simply trace the drawer on the paper and cut.

The line does not have to be perfectly straight, just try to make it as straight as possible.

Shake the Decopaste very well.

Using the Reviver brush, apply the Decopaste in sections, beginning at one end of the drawer.  The paste dries really quickly so work in 5″ – 6″ sections if possible.

It’s super easy.

I have no picture of this.  Ugh…sorry.

We stacked books on the drawers to help make sure we had gotten the paper smooth and had good adherence.

The weight also helps with any potential bubbles in the paper.

After the paste had dried, I sanded the edge of the drawers to eliminate any excess paper.

You can use an electric sander or a block, doesn’t matter.  Just be sure to sand at a downward angle so that you do not tear the paper.  Do not go across the paper side to side.

After the paper has dried, apply a coat of clear, dark glaze or Protect over the top.  We used Protect for this.

One coat should be fine.  Maybe do a second one if it’s a high traffic piece.

Since I was creating a craft cabinet, I thought I would add some extras.  I had an old frame laying around, along with a piece of corkboard and scrap fabric.  I cut the corkboard to fit into the frame, then wrapped the fabric around the corkboard.

I taped it down with clear packing tape by Gorilla.

I look up, only to see this…

Ummm, yeah, the Handler is apparently ‘waxing’ her chin with the tape.  I am serious, I cannot make this stuff up.

So our piece is all done now!

Isn’t it cool??

I love the way the paper ties all of the colors together!

One thing we did was cut the inside shelf down.  We took off about an inch and a half off the back, to make the frame fit inside with the door closed.

I had this little jewelry box and I thought it would great for small tools or other little odds and ends one might use for crafting.

It was lined with the wallpaper.  So cute!!

So there you have our first installment of F* Up Friday!

I love this as a craft center but I can also see this in a young girls room.

What do you think?  What an amazing
